Overview

Biography

Jon Grossman is an engineer at the RAND Corporation who specializes in sensor technology and issues in the deployment and usage of such technology. Grossman has more than 20 years of experience in the development of laser radars for high-resolution imagery. Recent work includes the development of nontraditional image processing to determine from a distance the intent of those under observation and to detect improvised explosive devices and chemical and biological weapons using both active and passive sensors. Research on usage of active sensors for the self-protection of helicopters was recently completed by RAND and used by the U.S. Marine Corps to help in their successful funding effort with Congress for their CH53x program.

Other recently research includes the independent cost and technology assessment of the F-35 fighter jet, space-based infrared sensor, next-generation Mars spacecraft; and assessment of laser technology and its use as a strategic and tactical weapon.

Grossman received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering/quantum electronics from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Recent Projects

  • Analysis of new anti-IED tactics and technology
  • High-resolution modeling of military operations in urban environments
  • Next generation of sensors for urban operations
  • System analysis of the Army's future forces
