Biography
Geoffrey F. Joyce is a senior economist at the RAND Corporation, associate professor at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Pharmacy, and senior research faculty member at USC's Leonard D. Schaeffer Center for Health Policy and Economics. His research has been published in leading medical, economic, health policy, and statistics journals and featured in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, U.S. News and World Report, and NBC Nightly News, on National Public Radio, and in other media.
Joyce's research focuses on the costs of medical care and the role of insurance. He published four studies in the Journal of the American Medical Association examining the impact of alternative pharmacy benefit designs on prescription drug utilization and spending. He also evaluated the effects of legislative proposals to extend Medicaid price discounts to lower-income residents of all ages. Other studies have examined the lifetime costs of chronic disease among the elderly, the cost-effectiveness of highly active antiretroviral therapy for HIV-infected patients, and differences in medical care utilization and costs under alternative financing arrangements and treatment settings. He is currently examining the impact of high-deductible health plans, health risk assessments, and Medicare Part D.
Joyce is also an adjunct associate professor of health services at UCLA, and a director of the UCLA/RAND Health Services Research Training Program. He received his Ph.D. in economics from City University of New York.
