Anas El Turabi

Biography
Anas Turabi is an honorary research fellow at RAND Europe. He received a BA with Honors in physiological sciences as well as a BM BCh in clinical medicine from the University of Oxford. He has a background in developing performance-assessment and management frameworks for public-sector organisations, having previously worked in strategy consultancy.
After completing foundation clinical training, Turabi spent two years at the Department of Health as clinical advisor to the Research & Development Directorate and special assistant to the Director-General for Research and Development, Prof Dame Sally Davies. In this role he led the development of the performance-monitoring and evaluation function of the National Institute for Health Research. He also acted as an advisor to the World Health Organisation on the development of its strategy on research for health, including working with Prof John Lavis of McMaster University to develop an evaluation framework for the strategy. Turabi has worked extensively on global health and global health-research policy issues on behalf of the UK government, contributing to the development of the government's Global Health Strategy, co-ordinating the UK's input to the 2008 Global Ministerial Forum on Research for Health and attending the World Health Organisation's Executive Board as part of the UK delegation.
Turabi currently holds an Academic Clinical Fellowship at the University of Cambridge's Department of Public Health and Primary Care, where he is part of Prof Martin Roland's Health Services Research Group. His current research work focuses on the evaluation of health research systems and policy.
