A sense of community was a critical element in the planning of the headquarters—not just among RAND staff, but also with the local Santa Monica community around it. The building materials, textures, shapes, and colors are similar to those of the neighboring courthouse, civic auditorium, and city hall. Adjacent land has been sold to the City of Santa Monica for use as parks, sports fields, and affordable housing.
