Ken Wells

Kenneth B. Wells, MD, MPH is a psychiatrist and health services researcher whose work focuses on improving care for depression, patterns of outpatient mental care and services, mental care for children in the U.S., and medication management of depression.

Dr. Wells is the Principal Investigator of the UCLA/RAND Center for Research Quality in Managed Care; the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Supplement to the Community Tracking Study; and the Partners in Care (PIC) Study. He directs the UCLA Clinical Scholars Program and the UCLA-NPI Health Services Research Center, which focuses on improving quality of care for psychiatric and neurologic disorders across the lifespan. An elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Wells is currently Chair of the Institute's Neuroscience and Behavioral Health Board.

This year, the American Psychiatric Association honored Dr. Wells with the Lester N. Hofheimer Prize for his contributions to research in psychiatry. He has also been the recipient of the Distinguished Investigator Award by AcademyHealth, the NIMH Senior Research Scientist Award in mental health services research, the Senior Health Services Research Award of the American Psychiatric Association, and was the first to receive the Young Investigator Award.

He is the author of two books, Caring for Depression and Beating Depression: The Journey to Hope.
