No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.: Effectiveness of Two Programs in the Pittsburgh Public Schools — 2010

This paper studies student participation and achievement in two Pittsburgh Public Schools (PPS) tutoring programs--the No Child Left Behind (NCLB)-mandated supplemental education services (SES) program and a state-developed tutoring program. The authors examine the characteristics of students participating in each program, the effects of participation on student achievement, and the program features that are associated with improved achievement.

An Outcome Evaluation of the Success for Kids Program — 2010

A nonreligious after-school program, Success for Kids (SFK) seeks to build resilience in children. Interestingly, it improves not just social and internal outcomes but also school-related outcomes, even though it is not an academic intervention.

Reparable Harm: Assessing and Addressing Disparities Faced by Boys and Men of Color in California — 2009

The study identifies some of the greatest socioeconomic, health, safety, and school readiness disparities for boys and men of color in California and reviews strategies to reduce the disparities, including effective programs, practices, and policies.

One aim of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is to allow children who attend underperforming schools to enroll in other schools or in supplemental education services. This report assesses the implementation of these options through 2006-2007.

Substance Use and Delinquency Among Fifth Graders Who Have Jobs — 2009

This research brief summarizes the effect of the Spirituality for Kids (SFK) program on a variety of outcomes. SFK positively affected nearly every domain tested. The study is first to show a causal link between spiritual development and resilience.

Opportunities for participation in high school extracurricular sports are limited. Future studies should test whether increased opportunities will increase physical activity and impact the increasing overweight problem in youths.

In evaluating two after-school programs in Pittsburgh, this report finds that while there has not been strong participation in these programs, participation is associated with improved students learning in math.
