Building a Safer Workplace: Complex Problems, Effective Solutions
Wednesday, March 15, 2006
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Conference Purpose
Occupational accidents and illnesses often
arise from complex interactions among workers,
technology, the environment, and even organizational
culture and history. This invitational conference
brought together key stakeholders, from
Pennsylvania and across the country, representing
government, industry, and labor. Conference
proceedings explored cutting-edge, multidisciplinary
perspectives on improving occupational
safety and health policy and helped to set
the agenda for the RAND Center for Health and
Safety in the Workplace for the coming years.
Conference Information
Key government officials, policy researchers, and representatives from labor and industry presented topics including worker health and safety concerns from the front lines, the effect of firm size on worker safety, and how policy research can improve workers' compensation policy. The Keynote Address looked at worker safety and health priorities in Pennsylvania, and the conference closed with a discussion about setting an effective research agenda for the RAND Center for Health and Safety in the Workplace.
