About the Youth Advisory Board

The Advisory Board has been modeled after the current adult advisory board that includes adult community members representing diverse community and school groups in LA County. These adult community members work closely with the Center and advise on research issues while keeping the Center abreast of important community-related information. The adult advisory board also serves as a liaison to local community contacts and services.

We have the same vision for the Youth Advisory Board. We would like to actively engage teens in working with the Center and our diverse community partners to identify health issues that they would like to address so we can jointly plan the Center’s research agenda. The Advisory Board provides formal and informal learning opportunities for teens via guest speakers, community talks, workshops, newsletters, and mailings.

  • Advisory Board members are between 14-18 years old, males and females, and represent the diversity of LA County
  • Advisory Board members are encouraged to remain active for the duration of their high school years
  • Advisory Board members are expected to attend multiple meetings per year
  • Advisory Board members must obtain a signed Permission Form from a parent or guardian to take part in council meetings and special activities.

Besides receiving lifelong leadership skills, and engaging in real world decision-making with fellow leaders of tomorrow, members will also:

  • Receive food and refreshments at each meeting
  • Have the opportunity to win a special raffle prize
  • Get free tickets for one special event or fun activity sponsored by the Center each year
  • Receive a Certificate of Achievement (upon successful completion of at least one year with the Advisory Board)
