Center Research

The Center's research agenda has a US–focused and a global component.

US Mission

Strengthening the U.S. public health system to address emerging challenges. Too many of America's public health agencies are underdeveloped in key areas, inadequately funded and staffed, and isolated from other parts of the health care and emergency response system. The preparedness of the public health system needs to improve in order to respond to the challenges posed not only by terrorism but also by naturally occurring diseases and health hazards.

The Center's efforts in this area include:

  • Strengthening the public health infrastructure;
  • Developing an evidence base for public health preparedness;
  • Developing and conducting exercises for public health preparedness;
  • Examining the emotional and behavioral consequences of terrorism, natural disasters, and other traumatic events, and
  • Understanding the health impact of Hurricane Katrina.

Global Mission

Supporting health systems' development in the global community and advancing health in foreign policy. Today, health and global well-being are inextricably intertwined. Nations around the world face the same challenges as the United States does in balancing costs, quality of care, and access to care. At the same time, the rapid spread of new and emerging infectious diseases and their potential use as terrorist agents grab headlines around the world, while in many regions, economic, political, and social development is held back because of poor health and poor health care.

The Center's efforts in this area include:

  • Providing strategic analysis and technical assistance to support health systems development, with an emphasis on quality of care, health care policy development, financing, health information technology, and public health emergency preparedness;
  • Developing models, metrics, tools, and organizations for improving national, regional, and global health;
  • Identifying ways in which health can contribute to foreign policy development and nation-building ; systems to respond to terrorist attacks
  • Examining the intersection between health and issues such as trade and economic policy; and
  • Developing health care and public health partnerships around the world.
