Data
The CPHHD Data Core houses a large number of measures derived for a variety of substantive areas in several distinct data series including: Cost-of-Living, Disability, Pollution, Population and Housing Characteristics, Segregation Indices, Street Connectivity, an Index of Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status. The number and comprehensiveness of the measures derived within each series vary according to the expansiveness of the substantive area.
Generally speaking, the time periods for which these data are available are the 1990-2000 time period, though data are available for years before and after this time frame, depending upon the series. Data are available for various geographic summarization levels including: census tract, county (FIPs and geographic), and MSA (geographic). In addition, the data have been put in terms of two temporal definitions of geography, either in terms of 1990 or 2000 geographical definitions. To facilitate ease of use, the series are available in several physical data formats including: SAS, STATA, and/or CSV formats.
FOR ACCESS TO THE DATA

DOCUMENTATION TO THE DATA is available without filling out a registration form, as described below:
Download Entire Documentation Package:
-
Census Series (Population and Housing Characteristics): Decennial Census-based measures including:
- Demographics (e.g., age, gender, race)
- Housing characteristics (stock, quality, ownership, costs, expenditures, occupancy, etc.)
- Crowding (housing and population density)
- Urbanicity
- Racial and ethnic composition
- Language measures
- Nationality and citizenship
- family/household structure
- Transportation
- Educational attainment
- Labor force
- Employment status
- Disabilities
- Income and poverty measures
-
Abridged Census Series:The abridged census series contains a subset of the measures in the full census series. The measures chosen are the most likely to be used on a frequent basis and should satisfy the majority of research needs.
Note: The Abridged Census Series is the only census series available after registering with the CPHHD. If after reviewing the documentation you determine that the unabridged version of this data series would better suit your needs, please contact Dr. Jose Escarce or Dr. Tamara Dubowitz.
-
Cost-of Living: Normalized, cost-of-living measures for metropolitan areas, derived from data from the American Chamber of Commerce Research Association.
-
Disability: Decennial Census-based measures of disability for aged populations (55+) by poverty level including disabilities on:
- Physical
- Employment
- Self-care
- Sensory
- Learning
- Mental
- Mobility
-
Pollution: EPA-based measures of airborne pollutant (ozone and particulate matter) levels including:
- 24-hour daily mean (PM)
- 8-hour 10am-6pm mean (ozone)
- 1-hour daily maximum (ozone)
-
Segregation Indices: Decennial Census-based, non-spatial segregation indices including:
- Normalized Simpson Interaction Diversity Index
- Entropy Diversity Index
- Dissimilarity Segregation Index
- Gini Segregation Index
- Information Theory Segregation Index
- Squared Coefficient of Variation Segregation Index
- Relative Diversity Segregation Index
- N-group Normalized Exposure Segregation Index
- Exposure Index
- Isolation Index
- 2-group Normalized Exposure Index
-
Street Connectivity: Street network based measures including:
- Streets: Number of street segments
- Nodes: Number of intersections (note: does not include pseudo-nodes)
- Average Block Length: Average length (perimeter) of street blocks (feet)
- Median Block Length: Median length of street blocks (feet)
- Average Block Size: Average area of street blocks (feet2)
- Median Block Size: Median area of street blocks (feet2)
- Alpha: Ratio of the actual number of complete loops to the maximum number of possible loops given the number of intersections.
- Gamma: Ratio of actual number street segments to maximum possible given the number of intersections
-
Index of Neighborhood Socioeconomic Status: Normalized index of disadvantage for census tracts, constructed from six variables:
- percent of adults older than 25 with less than a high school education;
- percent male unemployment;
- percent of households with income below the poverty line;
- percent of households receiving public assistance;
- percent of households with children that are headed by a female;
- median household income.
