Neighborhoods and Biological Markers of Allostatic Load

Principal Investigators: Chloe Bird and Brian Finch

Researchers will examine the relationships between neighborhood characteristics and the cumulative wear and tear on multiple organ systems as a result of life stress.

This project will answer the following questions:

  • Is there a relationship between neighborhood characteristics and the allostatic load of individuals who live in those neighborhoods?
  • Do different types of neighborhoods and neighborhood features produce different biological “footprints”?

Methodology

The project will use NHANES III data geo-coded to various levels of aggregation, including census block groups and tracts.

Intended product

The findings will inform interventions to modify neighborhood characteristics that lead to increased allostatic load.
