Expert Recommendations for Electronic Prescribing Systems

Electronic prescribing systems vary widely in their features and in the methods they employ. Some of these variations are likely to influence the effects that electronic prescribing will have on health care quality and efficiency. Today, health care delivery organizations, physicians and other stakeholders have little information on which to select among the many available and emerging alternatives. Furthermore, electronic prescribing systems offer unprecedented avenues to affect physicians prescribing patterns in "real time," as prescribing decisions are initially being made. This powerful decision support technology can be used to improve patient care delivery, reduce the cost of care, or both.

To fill this gap, Pfizer funded the RAND Corporation to conduct an independent review of current electronic prescribing products and to develop expert recommendations for comparing electronic prescribing systems. These will allow health care organizations to select systems that optimize both patient outcomes and costs of care, while also providing insight on how prescribing occurs and the influences on the process.
