Electronic Prescribing Research at RAND
|
Electronic prescribing holds promise for delivering information to the point of care that can improve prescribing safety, office efficiency, and cost effective medication use. Although some examples of electronic prescribing have existed for many years, advances in the infrastructure for handling electronic prescription transactions are expected to speed the adoption of this technology. |
Research Projects
Standards for Electronic Prescribing
This project evaluated the standards for electronic prescribing that are under consideration by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as possible initial requirements for transmitting prescriptions and related information electronically between doctors, pharmacies and prescription drug plans.
RAND partnered with Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and a coalition of leading e-prescribing companies to evaluate the technical adequacy and the outcomes of standardized electronic prescribing transactions among physicians participating in Horizon's ongoing e-prescribing initiative.

Expert Recommendations for Electronic Prescribing Systems
In 2005, RAND completed a study that developed expert-panel recommendations for electronic prescribing systems and that evaluated the implementation of these recommendations among commercially available systems. The results of this study provide health care organizations with guidance in selecting the e-prescribing systems most likely to improve patient outcomes as well as health care efficiency.
