Biography Summary

Claude Berrebi, Ph.D., MBA, is an Economist at RAND and a member of the Pardee-RAND Graduate School faculty. Dr Berrebi earned his Ph.D. in economics at Princeton University (2005). His dissertation is entitled, "Terrorism: Causes and Consequences".

Dr. Berrebi's work on terrorism includes an extensively cited study investigating the link between education, poverty and terrorism published in the BE Press journal Peace Economics, Peace Science and Public Policy. A second paper published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution analyzed the simultaneous relationship between terrorism and electoral outcomes, a third focused on the impact of terrorism across industries based on fluctuation of firm's stock market valuation, a fourth, in the Defence and Peace Economics journal, analyzed the spatial and temporal determinants of terrorism risk using Israel as a case study, a fifth paper, in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, investigates human capital and the productivity of suicide bombers, and a sixth terrorism study in the American Political Science Review analyzes the impact of terrorism on Israeli voter's preferences. Dr Berrebi's ongoing terrorism studies include one aimed at assessing the effectiveness of suicide bombers' home demolitions as a counterterrorism policy, and another study investigating the link between economic conditions and the quality of terror. Dr. Berrebi is also a core member of the European Commission's Network for the Economic Analysis of Terrorism and Anti-Terror Policies (NEAT) working on a new agenda for European security economics.

Dr. Berrebi's work at RAND also includes a labor market study for the US department of labor, another study assisting the Qatari government in the examination of its labor market structure and performance while assessing reforms options, a project for the US treasury department modeling the appropriate level of asset forfeiture in cases involving the employment of illegal aliens, a study for the Securities Exchange Commission analyzing the regulatory as well as perceived differences between broker dealers and investment advisers, a study for the defense department about trends and radicalization in the Pakistani military, and a risk analysis of energy alternative futures following an increased usage of natural gas for the Israeli government. Dr Berrebi was in charge of the economic analysis in a multi-disciplinary team of researchers advising the National Institutes of Health about the feasibility of a National Clinical Research Associates network.

Dr. Berrebi's research has been featured extensively in media outlets such as ABC News, Atlantic Monthly, Christian Science Monitor, CNN/Fortune, The Daily Times, The Daily Tribune, The Financial Times, The Jerusalem Post, The New York Times, Newsweek, The Observer, and The Washington Post to mention a few among many others. Dr. Berrebi received a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University in 2005. He holds B.A. and MA degrees in economics, both Summa Cum Laude, from The Hebrew University, an MBA in finance Cum Laude from the Hebrew University Business School, and a second Masters degree in Applied Microeconomics from Princeton University.
