China and the Internet: Game of Cat and Mouse?
CAPP hosted a presentation at RAND's Santa Monica office on December 12, 2002 by Guo Liang, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and a well-known authority on China's Internet, about China's Internet censorship and usage. Guo is a partner in the World Internet Project (WIP), a global ten-year longitudinal study of both users and non-users to gage the impact of the Internet on society, politics, and economics.
Falling Fertility: Developing Countries Reap Benefits of "Demographic Dividend"
Developing countries can spur economic growth by reducing high fertility rates and enacting policies to improve health, education, and job opportunities, according to a RAND report that sheds new light on the longstanding debate about the effect of population growth on economic development. East Asian nations have had the most success in capturing the demographic dividend. The benefits of a falling birth rate and a burgeoning working-age population account for as much as one-third of the region's economic growth, according to the report.
Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs Representatives Discuss Future of US-Korea Relations with RAND Researchers
Officials from the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs visited RAND's Santa Monica office on December 9 to solicit insight and analysis from several RAND researchers on a study they are conducting to forecast the world environment in 2020 and its impact on Korea.
Fifth Annual RAND-China Reform Forum Conference
Since 1998, the China Reform Forum (CRF), a think tank affiliated with the Central Party School, and RAND have jointly organized an annual conference of experts from China and the United States focusing on economic and security subjects of mutual concern. The fifth joint conference was held October 31-November 1, 2002 in Beijing. Participants and observers included scholars, businesspeople, and government officials from both the United States and China.
RAND Hosts Conference and Panel Discussion on Indonesia
Over 60 U.S. and Asian government and military officials, analysts, and business executives, including representatives of several Southeast Asian embassies, attended a conference and panel discussion sponsored by RAND and the United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO) at RAND's Washington office on December 11, 2002.

On November 20, 2002, CAPP hosted a roundtable with analysts from several research institutions in Taiwan. The topics of cross-strait relations, China's economy, and warming trends in the relationship between the U.S. and China dominated the discussion.
