Pardee RAND Graduate School Expands Exchange Programs with Universities in Asia

The Pardee RAND Graduate School (PRGS) is establishing closer ties to three universities in Asia and creating exchange programs to provide fellowships for a few top students from these schools.

Recently, RGS established two fellowships with Peking University -- the RAND-Institute for Population Research Fellow, and the RAND-Peking University School of Government Fellow. PRGS will also provide a Ph.D. fellowship to a student from the Korea Development Institute School of Public Policy and Management.

The Pardee RAND Graduate School’s collaboration with universities in Asia began with Tsinghua University in China. Candidates are selected by Tsinghua for the annual RAND-Tsinghua University Fellowship, then forwarded to the PRGS admissions committee for approval.

Tsinghua University nominated two students for 2003. "They were so good that the PRGS Admissions Committee chose them both," says PRGS Dean Bob Klitgaard. "So we have two inaugural Tsinghua-Pardee RAND Graduate School scholars for 2003.”

  • Ze Cong earned a masters degree at Tsinghua’s School of Public Policy and Management, where she won the Guang Hua Scholarship and the 1st Prize of Excellent Leader Scholarship given to the top ten of all the graduate leaders at Tsinghua University. Her publications include “The ‘Marriage’ between Multinational Companies and Universities in China.” She received a BS in theoretical physics from Tsinghua, earning many prizes and honors.
  • Yuhui Zheng ranked first among graduate students in the masters program at Tsinghua’s School of Public Policy and Management. Her work at the China Program Office of Environmental Defense led to the publication “The Feasibility of SO2 Reduction in China through Market-based Instruments.” She earned a BEng from Tsinghua University where, in addition to many academic honors, she was the University’s champion in the women’s 400 meters.
