RAND Welcomes High-level Delegation from China

On February 26, 2004, RAND welcomed a high level delegation from China led by Ambassador Ma Zhen Gang, Vice-Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Senior Advisor at the China Institute for International Strategic Studies, that included Ms. Xia Jihui, Deputy Director-General, Office of Foreign Affairs Committee, Mr. Jin Canrong, Associate Dean, School of International Studies at the Renmin University of China, Mr. Hui Lihua, attaché, U.S. Affairs Divison, Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing and Ms. Zhou Xiaomei, Consul for Political & Press Affairs, Chinese Consulate in LA.

Natalie Crawford chaired the meeting, which was attended by Nina Hachigian, Bill Overholt, Norman Levin, Charles Wolf, Jason Wang, and Ambassador James Hodgson. The group discussed the future of the US-China relationship, the current focus of China's diplomacy, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The Chinese delegation stressed China's interest in maintaining a cooperative relationship with the United States. Both sides agreed that China and the US should work cooperatively on common mutual threats, such as terrorism, proliferation and infectious disease.
