CMEPP and IFRI Host Workshop on Problems in the Middle East

On November 25, 2003, RAND’s Center for Middle East Public Policy (CMEPP) and the French Institute for International Relations (IFRI) in Paris held a one-day workshop on current problems in the Greater Middle East. This was the second in a series of such workshops held by CMEPP and IFRI.

Shi'i Ritual and Politics : A Lebanese Case Study

On October 31, Dr. Augustus Richard Norton, a professor in the Departments of Political Science and Anthropology at Boston University, presented a talk at RAND's Santa Monica office that focused on Ashura rituals in Lebanon commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammed.

CMEPP Holds Board Meeting in Doha

A joint meeting of the RAND Board of Trustees and the Advisory Board of the RAND Center for Middle East Public Policy (CMEPP) was held in Doha, Qatar, on October 12, 2003.

Second Bi-Annual Meeting of the U.S.-Turkish Council

On October 15, 2003, the second bi-annual meeting of the U.S.-Turkish Council was held in Istanbul, Turkey.

RAND-Qatar Policy Institute Officially Opens

Formal opening ceremonies were held for the RAND-Qatar Policy Institute and the creation of a Board of Overseers was announced on October 13, 2003. The Qatar Foundation and RAND established the Institute in April to harness the research and analytic skills of hundreds of RAND experts in the United States and Europe to study important issues facing the greater Middle East region. RAND Vice President Michael Rich and Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Misnad, Chairperson of the Qatar Foundation and Consort of the Emir of Qatar, will co-chair the Board. Jerrold Green, CMEPP Director and Director of RAND's International Plans and Programs is one of the Board's members.

Workshop Focuses on Prospects for U.S.-Russian Partnership for the Middle East

The Center for Russia and Eurasia (CRE) and CMEPP, in concert with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace's Moscow office, convened a workshop in Moscow on the Future of the Greater Middle East and Prospects for U.S.-Russian Partnership in its context.

CMEPP hosted a roundtable with Dr. Abdel Monem Said Aly focusing on U.S.-Egyptian relations.

RAND Welcomes President of Pakistan

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf discussed his country's role in the war on terrorism, root causes of terrorism, and potential solutions during a recent visit to RAND headquarters.

GCSP/RAND Convene Fourth Annual Meeting in Switzerland

RAND's Center for Middle East Public Policy and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy convened their fourth annual conference on May 4-5, 2003. The theme of this year's meeting, held at the Villa Belle Rive outside Geneva, was the Middle East in the Shadow of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Director Discusses Perspectives from Saudi Arabia

Jerrold Green, director of RAND's International Programs and CMEPP director, made a recent trip to Saudi Arabia to conduct research for a forthcoming report on U.S.-Saudi relations. On April 8 at RAND's Santa Monica office, Green discussed his trip and the perspectives voiced by that country's residents.

RAND Analyst Briefs Congress on Nation-Building

Policymakers are debating how to proceed with what will likely be one of the most challenging reconstruction efforts the United States has faced since its work in Germany and Japan after World War II. James Dobbins, director of RAND's International Security and Defense Policy Center, contributed his extensive knowledge on nation-building strategy when he briefed the U.S. Congress on April 29, 2003.

Towards a Post-War Gulf Security Strategy

CMEPP hosted a seminar by RAND Europe Research Leader Andrew Rathmell on “A Gulf Security System After the War: Back to the Future?” Rathmell examined the limitations of previous attempts to stabilize the Gulf region and presented recommendations for long-term solutions to avoid historical patterns of war and conflict in the future.
