Quality Policing Research on Performance Measurement

Background

To continuously improve quality and cost-effectiveness, police forces need to evaluate the procedures they use. To do this, they must identify measures of performance that are unobtrusive to collect, but that accurately assess progress. Metrics are needed both to appraise the organization's overall performance and gauge the effectiveness of specific functions and activities.

Research goals

CQP will shape national discussion of what it means for a police force to be “effective.” It will also propose how to measure this by developing metrics that local police departments can use to improve quality, efficiency, and accountability. By presenting performance metrics in tandem with best practices, CQP will be able to work with police agencies to make data-driven decisions about how to enhance performance and design effective systems for improving quality.
