IFLS Data Updates

The following data updates have become available since the third issue of the FLS Newsletter (Issue 3, December 1996). These updates have been (or will be) published in subsequent FLS Newsletters, which will also be available from the FLS home page.

IFLS-1 Updates

Date: 3/27/96

The following "fixes" files have been updated. The additional fixes code appears at the end of each file and is noted as ocurring after public release:

  • buk4ch1.fix
  • buk4ch2.fix
  • buk4br1.fix
The online "fixes" files have been updated and are in the hhldpgms subdirectory for both the SAS transport data and the ASCII data versions. The online data are available via the FLS Home Page and via RAND's anonymous FTP server (see Obtaining Data from the IFLS). The data on CD-ROM from RAND will not be revised; updated "fixes" files must be obtained from the above online sources.

For a discussion of "fixes" files, see the introduction to the IFLS-HH codebook (DRU-1195/4).

Date: 4/8/96

The variable MG50R1 in the BUK3MG3 subfiles (i.e., SAS transport and ASCII) was incorrectly created from the original 3-part rupiah response in Book 3 question MG50. The error has been corrected and the online BUK3MG3 subfiles in the iflsexp/book3 and iflsraw/book3 subdirectories have been revised. The online data are available via the FLS Home Page and via RAND's anonymous FTP server (see Obtaining Data from the IFLS). The data on CD-ROM from RAND will not be revised; the revised BUK3MG3 files must be obtained from the above online sources. ICPSR has been notified of the problem with the BUK3MG3 subfiles and has received corrected data.

Date: 4/11/96

The variable BFACTYPE in the BUKIJ01 subfiles (i.e., SAS transport and ASCII) was incorrectly generated. The error has been corrected and the online BUKIJ01 subfiles in the iflsexp/commun and iflsraw/commun subdirectories have been revised. The online data are available via the FLS Home Page and via RAND's anonymous FTP server (see Obtaining Data from the IFLS). The data on CD-ROM from RAND will not be revised; the revised BUKIJ01 files must be obtained from the above online sources. ICPSR has been notified of the problem with the BUKIJ01 subfiles and has received corrected data.

Date: 4/29/96

The following "fixes" files have been newly created:

  • buk5rj1.fix
  • buk5rn1.fix

The online "fixes" files have been updated and are in the hhldpgms subdirectory for both the SAS transport data and the ASCII data versions. The online data are available via the FLS Home Page and via RAND's anonymous FTP server (see Obtaining Data from the IFLS). The data on CD-ROM from RAND will not be revised; updated "fixes" files must be obtained from the above online sources. For a discussion of "fixes" files, see the introduction to the IFLS-HH codebook (DRU-1195/4).

Date: 5/8/96

The variables CA10 and CA13 in the BUKCCA3 subfiles (i.e., SAS transport and ASCII) were incorrectly generated as integer variables instead of variables with one decimal place. The error has been corrected and the online BUKCCA3 subfiles in the iflsexp/bookca and iflsraw/bookca subdirectories have been revised. The program file that reads the ASCII data, iflsraw/hhldpgms/BUKCAINP.SAS, has also been updated to read CA10 and CA13 correctly. The online data are available via the FLS home page and via RAND's anonymous FTP server (see Obtaining Data from the IFLS). The data on CD-ROM from RAND will not be revised; the revised BUKCCA3 files must be obtained from the above online sources. ICPSR has been notified of the problem with the BUKCCA3 subfiles and has received corrected data.

a) The following "fixes" files have been updated or newly created:

  • buk3rj1.fix
  • buk4ch2.fix
  • buk4kl1.fix (new)
  • buk4kl2.fix (new)
The online "fixes" files have been updated and are in the hhldpgms subdirectory for both the SAS transport data and the ASCII data versions. The online data are available via the FLS Home Page and via RAND's anonymous FTP server (see Obtaining Data from the IFLS). The data on CD-ROM from RAND will not be revised; updated "fixes" files must be obtained from the above online sources.

For a discussion of "fixes" files, see the introduction to the IFLS-HH codebook (DRU- 1195/4).

b) The IFLS-HH Codebook and IFLS-CF Codebook introductions were updated to correct the definition of FACCODE (revised text is in boldface):

The variable FACCODE is a 7-digit character variable. The first three digits contain the EA code. The fourth digit identifies the type of facility:
  1. Government Health Center (Puskesmas)
  2. Private Doctor/Clinic
  3. Nurse/Midwife/Paramedic
  4. Community Health and Family Planning Post (Posyandu)
  5. Traditional Healer
  6. Primary School
  7. Junior Secondary School
  8. Senior Secondary School

The remaining digits uniquely identify the facility within the EA and facility type.

c) The IFLS-HH Codebook was updated to include the following for the file BUK4KL1, variables PERSON and KLMTH1 (revised text is underlined):
PERSON 10 2 0 N M PERSON NUMBER FROM HOUSEHOLD ROSTER

71 WOMEN HAVE TWO OR MORE RECORDS IN
BUK4KL1, EACH FOR A DIFFERENT MARRIAGE.
THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE ONLY ONE RECORD
PER WOMAN, REGARDLESS OF NUMBER OF
MARRIAGES. THE CALENDAR START DATE IS
GENERALLY THE KLMTH1/KLYR1 ON THE FIRST
RECORD FOR THESE WOMEN; THE CALENDAR END
DATES ARE THE KLMTH2/KLYR2 ON THE LAST
                                          RECORD FOR THE WOMAN.

KLMTH1 15 2 0 N M DATE MARRIAGE/CALENDAR BEGINS-MONTH
                                         values: value label

FOR AROUND 60+ PERCENT OF WOMEN, THIS IS
THE DATE THE CALENDAR STARTED BECAUSE
THEY WERE ÒFIRST MARRIEDÓ MORE THAN 10
YEARS AGO SO START AT 1/89; FOR OTHERS
                                          IT IS THE DATE OF THEIR MARRIAGE;

FOR WOMEN WITH MULTIPLE MARRIAGES, THIS
                                          IS SOMETIMES THE LAST MARRIAGE,
                                          SOMETIMES THE FIRST MARRIAGE, SOMETIMES
THE EARLIEST MARRIAGE IN THE INTERVAL OF
                                          INTEREST.

THERE ARE 60 WOMEN FOR WHOM THE DATE IN
                                          KLMTH1/KLYR1 DOES NOT CORRESPOND WITH
THE EARLIEST MARRIAGE MONTH REPORTED IN
THEIR CALENDAR DATA. FOR SOME OF THESE
WOMEN, IT APPEARS THE CALENDAR START
DATE IS WRONG; FOR OTHERS, IT APPEARS
                                          THE KLMTH1/KLYR1 VALUES ARE INCORRECT.
CHECKS OF MARRIAGE DATES IN BUK4KW2 CAN
HELP SORT OUT SOME OF THESE
                                          INCONISTENCIES.
d) The IFLS-HH Codebook was updated to include the following for file BUK4KL3, variable KAL1 (revised text is underlined):

a) The following "fixes" files have been updated or newly created:

  • buk4kl1.fix
  • buk4kl2.fix
  • buk4kl3.fix
  • bkppkh01.fix
The online "fixes" files have been updated and are in the hhldpgms subdirectory for both the SAS transport data and the ASCII data versions. The online data are available via the FLS Home Page and via RAND's anonymous FTP server (see Obtaining Data from the IFLS). The data on CD-ROM from RAND will not be revised; updated "fixes" files must be obtained from the above online sources.

For a discussion of "fixes" files, see the introduction to the IFLS-HH codebook (DRU-1195/4).

b) The correction to the BKPPKH01 file from the IFLS-CF data creates a numeric version of the alphanumeric variable IH1 which contains price information. The numeric version is called IHR1. The alphanumeric version, IH1, has following form: 50 rupiah is represented as _._50. The above "fix" program for BKPPKH01 uses the SAS compress command to remove the underscore and period characters and then assigns the revised character string into the numeric variable IHR1. If you are not using SAS or a package which can manipulate character data, you may need to go into the ascii version of the BKPPKH01 file and convert those characters to blanks using a text editor before reading in the ascii data.

c) In the IFLS-HH codebook, DRU-1195/4, Table 1.8 on page 22 has a correction. The number of records in the file BUK2AK8 is 524, not 519. This same correction applies to Appendix A in the User's Guide.

d) In the IFLS-CF codebook, DRU-1195/5, Table 1.7 on page 18 has a correction. The list of files containing the Nurse/Midwife/Paramedic data should also include the following line (This same correction applies to Appendix B in the User's Guide.):

  • BKBDJ01
  • Vomitting and Diarrhea Case (GJ1-GJ8)
  • facility
  • 892

Date: 9/20/96

a) The following "fixes" files have been updated:

buk3ba8.fix
buk4ch1.fix
buk4ch2.fix
The online "fixes" files have been updated and are in the hhldpgms subdirectory for both the SAS transport data and the ASCII data versions. The online data are available via the FLS Home Page and via RAND's anonymous FTP server (see Obtaining Data from the IFLS). The data on CD-ROM from RAND will not be revised; updated "fixes" files must be obtained from the above online sources.

For a discussion of "fixes" files, see the introduction to the IFLS-HH codebook (DRU-1195/4).

b) The original public release files PROV, KAB, and KEC did not have geographic codes and names for province 17 (Bengkulu). This omission has been corrected and the online PROV, KAB, and KEC subfiles in the iflsexp/other and iflsraw/other subdirectories have been revised. The data on CD-ROM from RAND will not be revised; updated "fixes" files must be obtained from the above online sources.

c) The original public release file BKBIDINP.SAS, which provides input statements for the IFLS-CF raw files related to paramedics, nurses and midwives, had an error in the input statement for file BKBDA02. The last three variables listed in the IFLS-CF codebook (GA25A1_T, GA25A2_T, GA25A3_T) were accidentally omitted. The ommission has been corrected and the online file BKBIDINP.SAS in the iflsraw/commpgms subdirectory has been revised. The data on CD-ROM from RAND will not be revised; updated "fixes" files must be obtained from the above online sources.

d) Please ignore any extraneous variables in the SAS transport files. Only variables listed in the IFLS codebooks are of interest. You can ignore variables with names like _ID1, _I_, and FACID. In file BKBDB02, the variable GB8 is in the transport file and is just the character version of the public release variable GB8R1. Please use GB8R1.

e) As a result of preparations for IFLS-2, which will be fielded in fall 1997, a data file containing links between living noncoresident children in Section BA of Book 3 and the birth record for those children in Section CH of Book 4 has been created. Only noncoresident children of Book 4 respondents can have such links. To assist IFLS-1 users who may wish to match child records between the BA and CH sections, we have made this file of linked identifiers publicly available. This new file is called BA_CHKID and contains the following variables:

CASE Household number of Book 3/4 respondent
PERSON Household member number of Book 3/4 respondent
BA63A Noncoresident child roster number from BUK3BA8
CH05 Birth history number for child from BUK4CH1
PRGID Pregnancy record number for child from BUK4CH1,BUK4CH2

This new file is only available online and accessible via ftp or the FLS home page on the Web. A SAS transport file can be found in the iflsexp/others subdirectory; an ascii version can be found in the iflsraw/others subdirectory. The SAS input statement file is BACHINP.SAS and is found in the iflsraw/hhldpgms subdirectory.

Date: 11/5/96

a) The BUK2PH1 SAS transport subfile has too few observations. The ASCII version, however, does have the correct number of observations. The error in the SAS transport version has been corrected and the online BUK2PH1 subfile in the iflsexp/book2 subdirectory has been revised. The online data are available via the FLS Home Page and via RAND's anonymous FTP server (see Obtaining Data from the IFLS). The data on CD-ROM from RAND will not be revised; the revised BUK2PH1 file must be obtained from the above online sources. ICPSR has been notified of the problem with the BUK2PH1 subfile and has received corrected data.

b) The following "fixes" file has been updated:

buk3tk5.fix

The online "fixes" files have been updated and are in the hhldpgms subdirectory for both the SAS transport data and the ASCII data versions. The online data are available via the FLS Home Page and via RAND's anonymous FTP server (see Obtaining Data from the IFLS). a) The new file BA_CHKID added on 9/20/96 had an error. Some kids had missing CH05 values. Those missing CH05 values have now been corrected. If you extracted the BA_CHKID data earlier, please delete that data and replace it with the corrected version that is now on the anonymous ftp server. See the update notice for 9/20/96 above for details about the BA_CHKID data.

b) In the IFLS-HH codebook, the code definitions for RJ01B (page 256 in Book 3) and RJA01B (page 433 in Book 5) should be as follows in order to match the IFLS-HH questionnaire:

  • 1 = Public Health Center
  • 3 = Branch of Public Health Center (not a Puskesmas Pembantu)
