readme.cpi Data Group Name: CPI (1913-2003) Description: Annual Consumer Price Index. Includes indices for prices of all items and major categories of items, (eg., food, medical care). Data Source(s): The data series was ftp'd from the Bureau of Labor Statistics FTP site which can be accessed using ftp://ftp.bls.gov the name of datafile is: cu.data.2.Summaries and it is located in folder ftp://ftp.bls.gov/pub/time.series/cu/ Comments: 1. This file contains 1982-1984 and DECEMBER 1997 price data. An example of how to use the index: - assume cpi = consumer price index for a particular year - assume curr_dol = dollars in current $ for the year Then: real_dol=curr_dol/(cpi/100); 2. In 1998, some of the Major Group categories (eg., housing & entertainment) were reclassified. As a result: -The Entertainment index, which ended in 1997, is not included in this file. -The Education & Communication and Recreation categories are two indices in this file. They date back to 1993 and have a base period of DECEMBER 1997=100. (All other indices have a base period of 1982-1984=100.) 3.
