Permission to copy the data and documentation is granted for use in academic and public policy research and is granted to data archives/libraries to make copies as needed to fulfill research requests. Authorization by the copyright holders is needed for copying or using the 1995 EGSF database for uses other than academic and public policy research. Please contact RAND's Permissions Office if you have authorization questions. Below are some general requests of users of this database. Details about the ftp version of the 1995 EGSF database follow these requests. REQUESTS CONCERNING USE OF DATA FROM THE 1995 GUATEMALA SURVEY OF FAMILY HEALTH (EGSF) In return for use of the 1995 EGSF database, we request the following from users. Data librarians should forward these requests to all those who obtain the EGSF data from their data collection. 1. Please acknowledge RAND, Princeton, and Nutritional Institute of Central America and Panama (INCAP) in any publications based on the EGSF data. Below is a draft of such an acknowledgment: The EGSF data were collected by Noreen Goldman (Princeton University) and Anne Pebley (RAND) in collaboration with the Nutritional Institute of Central America and Panama (INCAP), under grants from the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development. 2. We would appreciate receiving copies of any papers based on the EGSF data formaintaing a bibiliography that will be available to interested users. Please send these to: Dr. Anne Pebley RAND 1700 Main Street P.0. Box 2138 Santa Monica, CA 90407-2138 3. Please send your e-mail address to egsf-supp@rand.org so that we can notify users of any updates oradditions to the EGSF data and documentation. Please include your mailing address and phone number as well to ensure we have you on our mailing list. Please notify us of any subsequent changes of address. 4. We recognize that once in the public domain, data and documentation may move freely. Our concern is in maintaining an accurate list of EGSF users so that we may be able to contact them should updates or additions to the database occur. ************************************************************ **** DETAILS ON FTP VERSION OF EGSF DATABASE ******** ************************************************************ The EGSF documentation is available from RAND's Distribution Service and in PDF format on this web site. The documentation consists of: DRU-1358/3-NICHD: The 1995 Guatemalan Survey of Family Health (EGSF): Overview and Codebook (pdf is egsfcdbk.all.pdf.gz) DRU-1358/1-NICHD: The Guatemalan Survey of Family Health, Appendix A, English Questionnaires (pdf is egsf_qx_english.all.pdf.gz) DRU-1358/2-NICHD: Encuesta Guatemalteca de Slaud Familia (EGSF), Apendice B: Cuestionarios en Espanol (Appendix B: Spanish Questionnaires) (pdf is egsf_qx_spanish.all.pdf.gz) RAND Distribution Services can be contacted via e-mail at order@rand.org or by phone: 310-451-7002. RAND documents can also be ordered via the Web by accessing RAND's Publications web page: http://www.rand.org/departments/publications The EGSF documentation in PDF format is found in the egsfdoc subdirectory. The 1995 EGSF data subfiles are found in three subdirectories: egsfraw: has the ascii version of data (.txt extension) egsfexp: has the SAS transport version of data (.exp extension) egsfdta: has the STATA version of data (.dta extension) expndpgm.zip: zip archive with Stata do files that created hhexpend and untprice supplementary files and which are described in Appendix E of the codebook PLEASE NOTE: THE EGSF DATABASE CONTAINS A NUMBER OF VARIABLES THAT ARE STORED WITH A SAS LENGTH OF GREATER THAN 4. IF YOU USE A DATA CONVERSION PROGRAM TO CONVERT THE SAS TRANSPORT FILES INTO ANOTHER FORMAT, PLEASE CHECK TO SEE THAT THE DEFAULT FOR VARIABLE LENGTH (IF THAT IS PART OF THE CONVERSION ROUTINE) IS SET FOR DOUBLE-PRECISION SO THAT LARGE VALUES WILL CONVERT PROPERLY. Within each subdirectory, there are zip files that contain the relevant data subfiles. There are also additional subdirectories that contain individual subfiles, but for downloading, the zip archives are the easiest way to go unless you have problems with downloading large zip files. Below is a description of the contents of the EGSF subdirectories. egsfdoc: DOCUMENTATION egsf_qx_english.all.pdf.gz (6 MB) egsf_qx_spanish.all.pdf.gz (6.2 MB) egsfcdbk.all.pdf.gz (1.1 MB) egsfdta: STATA FILES commdta.zip (.25 MB) (community data: claves, medicos, otros, puestos) hhlddta.zip (3.1 MB) (household data: pemit1-4, antro, suppl) egsfexp: SAS EXPORT FILES communexp.zip (.31 MB) (community data: claves, medicos, otros, puestos) hhldexp.zip (4.2 MB) (household data: pemit1-4, antro, suppl) convert.sas (sample program to convert .exp to SAS files) If can't download 4.2MB, can download pieces antro.zip (.37 MB) (Anthropometry) pemit1.zip (.59 MB) (Household register) pemit2.zip (1.2 MB) (Individual Survey: Sections A-D) pemit3.zip (.87 MB) (Individual Survey: Sections E-J) pemit4.zip (.99 MB) (Individual Survey: Sections K-N) suppl.zip (.18 MB) (Individual Survey: Supplemental files) egsfraw: ASCII FILES communraw.zip (.23 MB) (community data: claves, medicos, otros, puestos) hhldraw.zip (3.2 MB) (household data: pemit1-4, antro, suppl) inptpgms.zip (.06 MB) (input statements to read ascii data) If can't download 3.2MB, can download pieces antro.zip (.28 MB) pemit1.zip (.41 MB) pemit2.zip (.84 MB) pemit3.zip (.64 MB) pemit4.zip (.87 MB) suppl.zip (.15 MB) The ascii data subfiles take up around 50MB when all uncompressed; the SAS transport data subfiles take up around 85MB when all uncompressed: the Stata files somewhere inbetween. Program files (the .sas suffix files) for the ascii data are text files and have the DOS end-of-line and end-of-file characters. Users will need to change the pathnames in the input program files to match those of their system and will need to edit input program files to fit the programming language being used. PLEASE NOTE: IF ACCESSING THIS DATA VIA A WEB BROWSER, THE SOFTWARE MAY HAVE DEFAULTS SET SO THAT DATA IS AUTOMATICALLY UNCOMPRESSED ONCE IT HAS BEEN TRANSFERED TO YOUR MACHINE. THE ENTIRE EGSF DATABASE IS QUITE LARGE WHEN UNCOMPRESSED (50 MB FOR ASCII, 85 MB FOR SAS TRANSPORT). TO SAVE DOWNLOAD TIME AND DISK SPACE, YOU MAY WANT TO DISABLE ANY AUTOMATIC UNCOMPRESS FEATURES IF SUCH A FEATURE EXISTS NOTE ABOUT ASCII FILES: The ascii version files are UNIX text files. The zip routine will convert the text files so they are compatible with the given platform on which they are unzipped. Non-UNIX users may need to adjust zip preferences to tell zip these are ascii files. NOTE ABOUT SAS TRANSPORT FILES: The SAS transport files were created with the xport engine using PROC COPY. Please see the EGSF Codebook for details.
