************************************************************ ****** MHSS.README ****** ****** README FOR MHSS FILES ****** ****** Last edited 9/21/05 ****** ****** Questions about MHSS can be e-mailed to mhss-supp@rand.org ************************************************************ Please note that the 1996 MHSS database is copyrighted by RAND and ICDDR,B (International Centre for Diaorrheal Research, Bangladesh (copyright 1999). Permission tocopy the data and documentation is granted for use in academic and public policy research and is granted to data archives/libraries to make copies as needed to fulfill research requests. Authorization by the copyright holders is needed for copying or using the MHSS database for uses other than academic and public policy research. Please contact RAND's Permissions Office if you have authorization questions. Below are some general requests of users of this database. Details about the ftp version of the 1996 MHSS database follow these requests. REQUESTS CONCERNING USE OF DATA FROM THE 1996 MATLAB HEALTH AND SOCIOECONOMIC SURVEY (MHSS) In return for use of the 1996 MHSS database, we request the following from users. Data librarians should forward these requests to all those who obtain the MHSS data from their data collection. 1. Please acknowledge RAND and the other institutions involved in any publications based on the MHSS data. A citation to the following document will suffice as a proper acknowledgment: Rahman, O. et al. , "The Matlab Health and Socioeconomic Survey: Overview and User's Guide", DRU-2018/1, RAND, Santa Monica CA, 1999 2. We wwould appreciate receiving copies of any papers based on the MHSS data for maintaining a bibiliography that will be available to interested users. Please send these to: Dr. Jane Menken Department of Sociology University of Colorado, Boulder Institue of Behavioral Science Campus Box 484 Boulder, CO 80309-0484 3. Please send your e-mail address to mhss-supp@rand.org so that we can notify users of any updates or additions to the MHSS data and documentation. Please include your mailing address and phone number as well to ensure we have you on our mailing list. Please notify us of any subsequent changes of address. 4. Please notify us if any of the MHSS data is given to another individual or institution and please inform those individuals or institutions of the above requests. We recognize that once in the public domain, data and documentation may move freely. Our concern is in maintaining an accurate list of MHSS users so that we may be able to contact them should updates or additions to the database occur. ************************************************************ **** DETAILS ON MHSS DATABASE ******** ************************************************************ Documentation is available online PDF format and in Word 5.1 files (Macintosh files). The PDF files are found in the mhsscdbk directory and are gzipped as they are quite large, especially the questionnaire files. The Word files can be read easily by later versions of Microsoft Word and WordPerfect 6.0. The figures are in Office 98 for better graphics. The household and community codebook documentation files are zipped into PKZIP archive files. They are found in the mhsscdbk directory as hhcdbk_Word51.zip and comcdbk_Word51.zip. See the CDBK_README file in the mhsscdbk directory for details on the PDFs and Word 5.1 documentation versions. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE MHSS HOUSEHOLD SURVEY HAS THREE DISTINCT SAMPLES: THE MAIN SAMPLE, THE DNFS SAMPLE, AND THE OUTMIGRANT SAMPLE. THERE ARE SEPARATE SETS OF DATA SUBFILES FOR EACH SAMPLE. MAIN SURVEY SAMPLE DATA BEGINS WITH THE PREFIX MHD. DNFS SURVEY SAMPLE DATA BEGINS WITH THE PREFIX DNFS. OUTMIGRANT SURVEY SAMPLE DATA BEGINS WITH THE PREFIX MIG. The MHSS data subfiles are found in two subdirectories: mhssexp: has the SAS transport version of data (.exp extension) mhssdta: has STATA version of data (.dta extension) There is an additional text file for use with the Outmigrant data found in each of the above directories. The text file MIGTOMHD.TXT has the crosswalk between the Outmigrant CASE id and the Main Sample CASE id representing the household from with the Outmigrant originated. PLEASE NOTE: THE MHSS DATABASE CONTAINS A NUMBER OF VARIABLES THAT ARE STORED WITH A SAS LENGTH OF GREATER THAN 4. IF YOU USE A DATA CONVERSION PROGRAM TO CONVERT THE SAS TRANSPORT FILES INTO ANOTHER FORMAT, PLEASE CHECK TO SEE THAT THE DEFAULT FOR VARIABLE LENGTH (IF THAT IS PART OF THE CONVERSION ROUTINE) IS SET FOR DOUBLE-PRECISION SO THAT LARGE VALUES WILL CONVERT PROPERLY. Subfiles are zipped into PKZIP archives for each sample/book combination of the given questionnaire. mhssexp---- SAS transport files mhdexp_all.zip (all mhdexp zip files together--15.5 MB) dnfsexp_all.zip (all dnfsexp zip files together--6 MB) migexp_all.zip (all migexp zip files together--1.5 MB) commexp.zip (Community/Provider Survey data) (.36 MB) mhdexp1.zip (Main Sample Book I data, mhd prefix subfiles) mhdexp2.zip (Main Sample Book II data, mhd prefix subfiles) mhdexp3.zip (Main Sample Book III data, mhd prefix subfiles) mhdexp4.zip (Main Sample Book IV data, mhd prefix subfiles) mhdexp5.zip (Main Sample Book V data, mhd prefix subfiles) mhdexp6.zip (Main Sample Book VI data, mhd prefix subfiles) mhdwgexp.zip (Main Sample Survey household and individual weights) dnfsexp1.zip (DNFS Sample Book I data, dnfs prefix subfiles) dnfsexp2.zip (DNFS Sample Book II data, dnfs prefix subfiles) dnfsexp3.zip (DNFS Sample Book III data, dnfs prefix subfiles) dnfsexp4.zip (DNFS Sample Book IV data, dnfs prefix subfiles) dnfsexp5.zip (DNFS Sample Book V data, dnfs prefix subfiles) dnfsexp6.zip (DNFS Sample Book VI data, dnfs prefix subfiles) migexp1.zip (Outmigrant Sample Book I data, mig prefix subfiles) migexp2.zip (Outmigrant Sample Book II data, mig prefix subfiles) migexp3.zip (Outmigrant Sample Book III data, mig prefix subfiles) migexp4.zip (Outmigrant Sample Book IV data, mig prefix subfiles) migexp5.zip (Outmigrant Sample Book V data, mig prefix subfiles) migexp6.zip (Outmigrant Sample Book VI data, mig prefix subfiles) migtomhd.txt (Text file with mapping of MIG CASE numbers to the originating MHD CASE household number) mhssdta---- Stata files mhddta_all.zip (all mhd_dta zip files together--12.5 MB) dnfsdta_all.zip (all dnf_dta zip files together--4.8 MB) migdta_all.zip (all mig_dta zip files together--1.3 MB) comm_dta.zip (Community/Provider data subfiles) (.3 MB) mhd1_dta.zip (Main Sample Book I data, mhd prefix subfiles) mhd2_dta.zip (Main Sample Book II data, mhd prefix subfiles) mhd3_dta.zip (Main Sample Book III data, mhd prefix subfiles) mhd4_dta.zip (Main Sample Book IV data, mhd prefix subfiles) mhd5_dta.zip (Main Sample Book V data, mhd prefix subfiles) mhd6_dta.zip (Main Sample Book VI data, mhd prefix subfiles) mhdwgdta.zip (Main Sample Survey household and individual weights) dnf1_dta.zip (DNFS Sample Book I data, dnf prefix subfiles) dnf2_dta.zip (DNFS Sample Book II data, dnf prefix subfiles) dnf3_dta.zip (DNFS Sample Book III data, dnf prefix subfiles) dnf4_dta.zip (DNFS Sample Book IV data, dnf prefix subfiles) dnf5_dta.zip (DNFS Sample Book V data, dnf prefix subfiles) dnf6_dta.zip (DNFS Sample Book VI data, dnf prefix subfiles) mig1_dta.zip (Outmigrant Sample Book I data, mig prefix subfiles) mig2_dta.zip (Outmigrant Sample Book II data, mig prefix subfiles) mig3_dta.zip (Outmigrant Sample Book III data, mig prefix subfiles) mig4_dta.zip (Outmigrant Sample Book IV data, mig prefix subfiles) mig5_dta.zip (Outmigrant Sample Book V data, mig prefix subfiles) mig6_dta.zip (Outmigrant Sample Book VI data, mig prefix subfiles) migtomhd.txt (Text file with mapping of MIG CASE numbers to the originating MHD CASE household number) All SAS and STATA files are zipped with PKZIP. The SAS transport data subfiles take up around 350MB when all uncompressed; the STATA files about the same. PLEASE NOTE: IF ACCESSING THIS DATA VIA A WEB BROWSER, THE SOFTWARE MAY HAVE DEFAULTS SET SO THAT DATA IS AUTOMATICALLY UNCOMPRESSED ONCE IT HAS BEEN TRANSFERED TO YOUR MACHINE. THE ENTIRE MHSS DATABASE IS VERY LARGE WHEN UNCOMPRESSED. TO SAVE DOWNLOAD TIME AND DISK SPACE, YOU MAY WANT TO DISABLE ANY AUTOMATIC UNCOMPRESS FEATURES NOTE ABOUT STATA FILES: The Stata versions are Stata 4.0 files created by a RAND produced routine called sas2stata that converts UNIX-based SAS files into Stata files. Information on this UNIX-based software can be found on RAND's anonymous ftp server, ftp.rand.org, in the pub/software_and_data/FLS directory. NOTE ABOUT SAS TRANSPORT FILES: The SAS transport files were created with the xport engine using PROC COPY. Please see the Overview and User's Guide for details.
