Conferences

RSI and MiniMed

RAND is pleased to announce the 16th annual RAND Summer Institute (RSI). RSI consists of two annual conferences that address critical issues facing our aging population. The MiniMedical School for Social Scientists will be held on July 6-7, and the Demography, Economics, and Epidemiology of Aging conference on July 8-9, 2009. Both conferences will convene at the RAND Corporation headquarters in Santa Monica, California.

We are currently accepting applications. The deadline is March 13, 2009.

Qualified applicants must hold a Ph.D. or have completed two years of a Ph.D. program and be actively working on a dissertation. Only applicants working in the field of aging — or actively considering this research field — will be considered.

For more information, please contact Diana Malouf at malouf@rand.org or apply on line:

In the News and Opportunities

BeFi is now at RAND!

The Behavioral Finance Forum, an organization dedicated to helping consumers make better financial decisions, will become an initiative of the nonprofit RAND Corporation, leaders of the two groups have announced.

The Behavioral Finance Forum, also known as BeFi, was founded in 2006 by Shlomo Benartzi, professor at the Anderson School of Management at UCLA, and Warren Cormier, founder and president of the Boston Research Group. Both will continue to be involved with the Behavioral Finance Forum after RAND takes on management of its activities.

Behavioral finance is the study of the psychological factors that shape peoples' financial choices and decisions, including how they invest, how they save, and how they plan for retirement. BeFi was established to bring together academic, financial and governmental leaders interested in cutting-edge behavioral research for practical application.

The Behavioral Finance Forum's main activity is an annual conference where leading academic researchers exchange ideas with financial and governmental leaders. Often, these exchanges lead to follow-up projects where the conference participants collaborate to try out new ideas in real-world settings. The next conference is scheduled for May in Washington D.C., with the theme of U.S. / U.K. Behavioral Finance and Public Policy.

Researcher Opportunities

Fellowships in the Study of Aging

The RAND Corporation is accepting applications for one or more postdoctoral fellowships in the Study of Aging. This competitive program enables outstanding scholars to sharpen their analytic skills and advance their research agenda in the field of aging. Scholars come from various disciplines including economics, demography, sociology, and psychology.

Housed within RAND Labor and Population, the program blends formal and informal training and extensive collaboration with distinguished researchers without teaching obligations. One-year fellowships are renewable for a second year and provide a competitive stipend and health insurance.

Fellows must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and must have completed a Ph.D. in a relevant discipline before they begin the program. The program is open to new scholars, as well as individuals who have some research experience or are on leave from an academic position.

Application review begins February 9th, 2009.

Additional information and application materials are available at http://www.rand.org/labor/fellows/ or by contacting: Diana Malouf at malouf@rand.org
