Pilot Study (DNORPS)
DNORPS Data
The Displaced New Orleans Residents Pilot Study was fielded in the fall of 2006, approximately one year after Hurricane Katrina struck. Fieldwork was conducted by RTI International.
The DNORPS data has had only minimal cleaning. The DNORPS data is available only as Stata files. Data conversion programs such as Stat/Transfer can be used to convert the files into SAS or SPSS or ASCII with a dictionary.
The DNORPS data consists of a household-level file and an individual-level file. Each file includes relevant sampling weights and variables describing sampling strata.
DNORPS Household File
The household-level file has one record per interviewed household that contains information on each household member plus additional detailed information collected about the respondent.
The household-level file contains all of the information included in the individual-level files. The Restricted Data version contains 2000 U.S. Census tract and block identifiers as well as tract- and block-level Census statistics.
DNORPS Individual File
The individual-level file has one record for each of up to five household members for whom information on pre- and post-Katrina status was collected. The record for the respondent also contains the responses to questions that were only asked of this person.
The DNORPS household and individual data files are available in two forms: Public Use and Restricted Use.
Public use Data
The DNORPS Public Use data is a subset of variables from the Restricted Use files that excludes those questionnaire items and geographic identifiers that could result in indirect identification of households and respondents. The Public Use files omit the following items that were collected in the DNORPS:
- City names for locations in Q11-Q13,
- Current city residence,
- Death dates (for the two persons who died after Hurricane Katrina),
- Q8 country of birth if not USA,
- Zip code of current residence,
- Census tract and block of pre-Katrina New Orleans residence. The Public Use files also omit the Census tract- and block-level data that have been added to the Restricted Use data.
The Public Use data files are available to researchers after they complete a brief registration form.
Restricted use Data
The DNORPS Restricted Use data contains responses to all items in the DNORPS questionnaire (except private information such as the names of respondents and their contact information, which will never be released) plus more detailed geographic information for the pre- and post-Katrina locations of the respondents. The 2000 Census tract and blocks for the pre-Katrina residence are included as are tract- and block-level characteristics from the 2000 Census STF files.
While Public Use files may be accessed online, access to the Restricted Use data require a formal application and documented approval of the researcher’s data safeguarding plan by the institutional review board (IRB) at his/her home institution.
