RAND Experts Available on Obama-Medvedev Summit

President Barack Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev are conducting a two-day summit in Moscow to address a variety of U.S.-Russia security matters, including reducing nuclear warhead stockpiles, a European missile defense shield, and how the two nations can work together on securing Afghanistan.

RAND experts are available for interviews about the latest developments, including:

  • Is today's preliminary deal to reduce each nation's strategic nuclear warheads to between 1,500 and 1,675 each, good for U.S. security? What are its implications for future agreements on nuclear weapons reductions?
  • Can the summit help the United States and Russia overcome the major obstacles to reaching an agreement on missile defense?
  • Will Obama be successful in getting Russian support to pressure North Korea and Iran to end their nuclear weapons programs?
  • What are the implications of the agreement to allow transit of military equipment and personnel to Afghanistan through Russia?
  • Why does there continue to be so much emphasis placed on the personal connection between the leaders of the United States and Russia?

Stephen Larrabee is a RAND senior political scientist specializing in Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and Eastern Europe. He is the author of "Danger and Opportunity in Eastern Europe."

Andrew Weiss, a former Russia expert on the U.S. National Security Council staff, is executive director of the RAND Business Leaders Forum and director of the RAND Center for Russia and Eurasia. (He is currently in Moscow.)

Olga Oliker is a RAND senior international policy analyst who specializes in U.S.-Russia relations. She is the author of "Russian Foreign Policy: Sources and Implications."
