RAND Experts Available To Discuss Possible Abbas Resignation and Palestinian Issues

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has indicated that he may not seek reelection, which could affect efforts to secure stability in the Middle East. Today RAND released the conclusions drawn from a series of exercises that examined the challenges of the Arab-Israeli conflict – and of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in particular. RAND experts have expertise on the following topics:

  • What does the possible resignation of Abbas imply for the future of the Arab-Israeli conflict?
  • What are the key security and other challenges in Arab-Israeli (and related Middle East) relationships?
  • How is Israel in particular likely to react to the development?
  • What alternative strategies could the Obama administration pursue in addressing the Israeli-Palestinian problem and other regional issues?

The authors of the report:

David Aaron is the director of the RAND Center for Middle East Public Policy and former Deputy National Security Advisor to President Jimmy Carter whose research focuses on terrorism and counterterrorism, international economic policy and jihadism.

Robert Hunter is a senior advisor at the RAND Corporation and a former U.S. Ambassador to NATO. His research centers on the Middle East, Iraq, Iran, as well as international development.

Roger Molander is a senior policy researcher at RAND whose work focuses on counterterrorism, strategic warfare, and nuclear weapons. Previously he served in the National Security Council under the Nixon and Carter administrations.

Doug Shontz is an associate behavioral/social scientist at RAND who specializes in conflict resolution, military intelligence and legal research.
