New Paradigms and Parallels This is a by-invitation conference co-sponsored by RAND and Nanyang Technological University.
The goals of the conference are twofold:
  • discuss parallels between the history and impact of printing in Asia and Europe and the Internet with an eye toward informing practical, effective policies for the Internet and toward identifying signposts or trends to monitor as the Internet matures
  • produce a book of the major findings
When?

The conference will be October 5-6, 2000.

Where?

It will be held at the RAND office in Santa Monica, CA.

Why?

This is intended to be a small conference of experts on various aspects of printing or the Internet for the purpose of exploring in some depth the potential for the history of printing to inform proper policies and useful trend monitoring related to the Internet.

Who?

This conference will bring together historians with backgrounds primarily in Asian and European print history along with Internet philosophers. The attendees page lists those who are currently scheduled to attend.

How?

The format of the conference will be centered around small group discussions in four major areas of social impact:

  • political/governmental
  • social/cultural
  • business/financial
  • scientific/technological
The intent is to have prepared readahead papers in each area and for each of Asia and Europe. These will form the basis for the discussions in each of the small groups. The groups will also meet in plenary sessions to discuss findings.
