Hysterectomy

Ratings of Appropriateness

Cover: Hysterectomy

By: Steven J. Bernstein

This document reports the methods and results of an expert panel process convened to develop ratings of appropriateness of hysterectomy for non-emergency, non-oncology indications. The ratings were developed as part of a project to evaluate alternative methods for improving clinical decisionmaking regarding hysterectomy. The indications and ratings reflect the findings of a nine-member panel of physicians who rated the indications twice. The initial ratings were made individually and without group discussion. The second round of ratings were made during a two-day meeting, within the framework of a modified Delphi methods that is often used to bring groups closer to agreement.
