New RAND Classics
Digital printing technology is helping RAND to bring many classic titles from our early history back into print. To celebrate RAND's 60th anniversary in 2008, we have recently produced new editions of eight RAND classics:
- The Operational Code of the Politburo
- The Compleat Strategyst: Being a Primer on the Theory of Games of Strategy
- Space Handbook: Astronautics and Its Applications
- Strategy in the Missile Age
- Games of Strategy: Theory and Applications
- Planets for Man
- Habitable Planets for Man
- The Road to Total War
These are all worthy additions to the growing list of RAND Classics which have been brought back into print, including Pacification in Algeria, 1956-1958, one of our best-selling titles in 2007.

Recent Book Reviews
The October 2007 issue of The Journal of Military History includes a book review of two recent RAND titles. It calls Pacification in Algeria, 1956-1958 “an exciting story of the difficulties faced by a small-unit commander striving to succeed in a nebulous counterinsurgency environment… a story small-unit leaders in Iraq today will find quite familiar. On “Other War”, it states, is “[an] essential work for any scholar of small wars and counterinsurgency.”
The May/June 2007 issue of Foreign Affairs reviews The Beginner's Guide to Nation-Building by James Dobbins, et al., stating “Dobbins and his associates at RAND have led the way in reflecting on these experiences in an effort to find lessons for the future."
In its review of Beyond al-Qaeda: part 1 and 2, by Angel Rabasa et al., Choice magazine states "…For a reader seeking a description of al-Qaeda's history, structure, financing, tactics, and evolution, this work provides a concise explanation of these key elements of the terrorist network. It is free of unnecessary and confusing jargon and accessible to students at any level… Recommended. All readership levels."
The May 2007 issue of the Far Eastern Economic Review praises Building Moderate Muslim Networks, by Angel Rabasa, et al.: "…In [this"> landmark report, four RAND scholars draw a nuanced yet common-sense distinction between radical and moderate Muslims, and make sweeping policy prescriptions that, if implemented, will fundamentally alter the way Western governments tackle what is arguably the most pressing threat of our times…"
