School Violence

Prevalence, Fears, and Prevention

By: Jaana Juvonen

School shootings have left deep scars in our nation. In spite of measures taken to improve school safety — including the use of metal detectors and security guards on campuses, rules and regulations concerning student behavior and dress, profiling of potentially violent students, anti-bullying instructional programs, and counseling and mediation — public fears about shootings have been raised to epidemic proportions. RAND examined the literature concerning these measures and programs and found that only a handful have been evaluated and even fewer deemed effective or even promising. The goal of this paper, therefore, is to describe options currently available to schools and to analyze the key components of various approaches to help determine their potential positive and negative effects.
