Health Status Age: An Age Predictive Health Status Index.

Cover Image

By: Allan Abrahamse, A. I. Kisch

This report describes HSAGE, a new health status index defined to be that linear combination of six health-related parameters which best predicts a person's chronological age: diastolic blood pressure, serum cholesterol concentration, observable electrocardiogram abnormalities, observable chext X-ray abnormalities, presence of varicose veins in the legs, and a periodontal index. Data used in the model were derived from 5313 records from the Health Examination Survey for 1960-1962. The model used to define HSAGE was a classical linear regression model. HSAGE can be used as an individual health status index and, when aggregated, as a community index. The process of controlling for age distribution in sample communities is discussed, and the variation of HSAGE across demographic boundaries is examined to determine if health does depend to a certain extent on demographic factors, such as age, race, etc. 29 pp. Ref.
