Quality of Medical Care Assessment Using Outcome Measures
Eight Disease-Specific Applications
Second in a series of three volumes, this report contains eight separate technical papers on eight conditions and procedures: asthma in children and adults; breast mass and breast cancer; cholecystectomy; diarrhea and dehydration in children; ischemic heart disease; osteoarthrosis; otitis media in children; and tonsillectomy with and without adenoidectomy. Each paper presents: (1) epidemiological data; (2) operational definitions of the disease or indications for the procedures, and the patient population; (3) identification of factors not under the control of medical care that may influence outcomes regardless of quality of care; (4) a method for controlling for these factors; (5) specific outcome standards that could be used to assess quality of care; (6) the relative importance and sensitivity of each outcome; (7) estimates of the size of the sample necessary to identify a specific number of patients with a given condition; and (8) four tables describing the proposed outcome measures and specific item pools necessary for data collection.
