Meteorological-Geological Investigations of the Wupatki Blowhole System
An exploration of an unknown Arizona cavern conducted entirely from the surface by combined meteorological and geological methods. By metering air from a small blowhole, using tracers from one blowhole to another, making a gravity survey, and comparing the resulting data with the known geology of the area, a Rand team deduced the existence of a cavern system spanning distances of 24 miles or more and having a volume upward of 7 billion cubic feet.
