The removal of Rankovic; an early interpretation of the July Yugoslav Party plenum.

Cover Image

By: Richard Voyles Burks

An analysis of the significance of the dismissal, in July 1966, of Aleksandar Rankovic from his posts in the Yugoslav government and Party and the removal of his lieutenants from their positions. The purge has resulted in reorganization of the security police and reconsideration of the role of the Party apparatus. Probable later effects include implementation of the economic reform adopted in 1965 and a greater role for parliament and the electorate in Yugoslav politics. Since Rankovic was generally considered heir apparent, the succession to Tito is more uncertain than before. 34 pp
