The Los Angeles Neighborhood Services and Characteristics Database
Codebook
This document describes the content and structure of the Los Angeles Neighborhood Services and Characteristics (L.A.NSC) database. The database was developed for use with Wave 1 of the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey (L.A.FANS-1), which was fielded in 2000-2001. The L.A.NSC contains contextual variables for all Los Angeles County census tracts, based on tract definitions from the 1990 Census. The choice of 1990 Census for the L.A.NSC tracts reflects the use of these geographic units to sample neighborhoods for L.A.FANS. The contextual measures describe tract demographic, social, economic, and physical characteristics. The data are primarily for 1990, although the range of years covered by the measures is from 1980 to 2003. The L.A.NSC database is designed to support multilevel analyses of the L.A.FANS data, but has many other potential uses. This document serves as the codebook for the L.A.NSC. The L.A.NSC database is available to the public through the L.A.FANS web site: www.lasurvey.rand.org. The database is available in both SAS export format and Stata format. There is a single file in SAS Version 8 LINUX format, which is because it has characteristics that do not conform to SAS export format.
