RAND and 100 Black Men of America Meet to Address Education Policy
In late March 2007, RGSPI co-sponsored a conference with the 100 Black Men of America (“the 100”) entitled “The Future of Education Mini-Institute: Intervention Strategies for Students of Unrealized Potential.” Jackson State University hosted the event. RAND researcher Rebecca Kilburn co-chaired the event with 100 member Howard Rasheed. Attendees included leaders and members from the national and local levels of the 100, along with local leaders from the public and private sector. The meeting focused on education policies affecting disadvantaged youths. Its objective was to gather information to inform key policymakers in federal government, develop questions to pose to presidential candidates, and provide guidance to local 100 chapters about educational interventions.
Presenters included researchers and practitioners from more than a dozen states. RAND researchers John Engberg and John Pane spoke about measuring high school completion and dropout rates, and data-driven decisionmaking in education, respectively.
