Bruce L. Akey, DVM, MS

Acting State Veterinarian
Director, Division of Animal Industry,
New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets

Dr. Akey is currently the Acting State Veterinarian and Director, Division of Animal Industry of the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets whose responsibilities include emergency preparedness, animal disease surveillance, information systems and zoonotic diseases.

He previously held the position of Assistant State Veterinarian and Director of the Virginia Animal Health Laboratory System and was Deputy Incident Commander of the 2002 Virginia Avian Influenza Taskforce. He served as President of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians in 2000 and is currently Chair of the AAVLD Government Relations Committee, Co-Chair of the Joint AAVLD/USAHA Animal Health Information Systems Committee and Co-Chair of the National Animal Health Reporting System Steering Committee.

He was a member of the recent NASDA Animal Health Safeguarding Review of USDA:APHIS:Veterinary Services and is now a member of the Information Technology Implementation Team. He was named the “2001 Food Hygiene Veterinarian of the Year” by the American Association of Food Hygiene Veterinarians.
