The ODPM is the department responsible for developing sustainable communities, and has responsibility for regional and local government, including enhancing resilience at those levels. Alun has had a range of jobs in a number of central government Departments.

From 1994 to 1998 Mr. Evans was Principal Private Secretary (equivalent to Chief of Staff) to successive Secretaries of State for Education and Employment. From 1998 to 2000, he was Head of Strategic Communications in the Prime Minister's Office, and from 2000 to 2001, he was Director of Communications for the Deputy Prime Minister. From 2001 to 2002 he was Secretary of the Independent Inquiry into the lessons to be learned from the epidemic of foot and mouth disease that struck Britain in 2001. For the past year he has worked in the ODPM.
