Dr. Roth is a Diplomate of
the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists. He is the Executive
Director of the Institute for International Cooperation in Animal Biologics
(IICAB), which is a World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Collaborating
Center for the Diagnosis of Animal Diseases and Vaccine Evaluation in
the Americas. Dr. Roth also is the Director of The Center for Food Security
and Public Health established in 2002 at ISU, which is funded through
a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CFSPH
has been designated as a CDC Specialty Center for Public Health Preparedness
in Veterinary Medicine and Zoonotic Diseases.
Dr. Roth received his DVM
and a PhD in immunology from Iowa State University. He has served as the
major or co-major professor for 34 MS and PhD students. In 1998, he was
the first recipient of the John G. Salsbury Endowed Chair in Veterinary
Medicine at Iowa State. He has authored or coauthored over 120 publications
in refereed journals, 22 book chapters, and has edited five monographs
and one textbook.
Dr. Roth teaches immunology
to veterinary students and twice received both the Norden Distinguished
Teaching Award and the Student AVMA Basic Science Teaching Award.
Dr. Roth’s research
emphasis includes neutrophil, lymphocyte, and monocyte/macrophage function
related to immunologic responses during host-pathogen interactions and
characterization of cell-mediated immune responses to vaccines. He is
currently developing a marker vaccine and companion diagnostic test for
Nipah virus.
