Analysis for Technology for a Sustainable Future: A Framework forAction

The Science and Technology Policy Institute assisted the Office of Scienceand Technology Policy (OSTP) and the National Science and Technology Council(NSTC) in assessing the role of environmentaltechnologies for achieving a sustainable future and the federal government'spolicy role in this process. As part of this effort, the institute created andanalyzed future worldwide demographic, environmental and economic scenarios outto the year 2025 to assess potential environmental technology needs and markets. To help with this analysis, the institute developed an interactive GeographicInformation System (GIS) tool to project worldwide environmental, demographic,and economic trends to highlight potential future environmental technologymarkets. United Nations, World Bank and World Resources Institute data at thecountry and city level were integrated in this interactive GIS analysis tool.This analysis helped in the writing of theNational Science and Technology Council interagency document:
