Abstract:

Data from satellites and other sources provide vitalinformation about the earth's environment. Over the next 10-20 years, linkingthese data sources together is expected to provide a digital picture of earth'senvironment which will allow continual environmental monitoring and enhancedsecurity. The challenge is to establish the operational data handling andexploitation systems that will allow monitoring of specific aspects of theearth's environment at critical points in space and at specific times and then todisseminate this data widely, without compromising security. To realize thisvision, technology development or refinement is needed in expert systems, datamining algorithms, massively parallel computing, image visualization, and largequantity data storage and archival systems. This seminar will explore thetechnology currently available for and the technology challenges facing remotesensing and geographic information systems, as well as the systems integrationneeded to converge the capabilities of these technologies into 'DigitalEarth.'
