HIV incidence is the rate that new infections occur in populations and tracks the leading edge of the AIDS epidemic. In recent years, various public health agencies have revised statistical estimates of the scope of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and HIV incidence. In this talk, I will discuss the reasons for these revisions, the main sources of errors and problems in measuring HIV incidence and opportunities for improving their reliability. I will consider the use of new technologies for determining incidence such biomarkers that indicate when persons became infected and their underlying statistical issues. Changing methodologies and data sources present new challenges in assessing time trends in HIV incidence, and the effectiveness of HIV prevention efforts.
