The collapse of financial markets in late 2008 has invited renewed questions about the governance, compliance, and ethics practices of firms. RAND convened a symposium to explore the perspective and role of corporate boards of directors in overseeing ethics and compliance matters within their firms.

Leader Development in Army Units: Views from the Field — Feb 16, 2008

Summarizes discussions with over 450 Army officers (lieutenants through colonels) about leader development in Army units. These discussions revealed that the type and extent of leader development activities vary greatly across units, but that they are generally informal and most heavily influenced by the unit commander. The authors conclude with suggestions on how the Army school system can improve leader development.

Advancing the U.S. Air Force's Force-Development Initiative — Dec 12, 2007

The following steps are recommended for consistent, efficient, and effective plans and means for improving the development of U.S. Air Force officers in their career fields: (1) identify the demand for jobs in the field grades — major, lieutenant colonel, and colonel; (2) ascertain the backgrounds that officers have accumulated (assess the supply); (3) compare supply with demand (gap analysis); and (4) plan ways to close the gaps.
