RAND at a Glance

RAND Locations

Mission

To help improve policy and decisionmaking through research and analysis.

Funding

RAND's research is commissioned by a wide range of sources. Federal, state, and local government agencies provide the largest share of the funding; however, RAND also conducts projects for foundations, foreign governments, and private-sector firms. Contributions from individuals, charitable foundations, and private firms, as well as earnings from RAND's endowment, offer a steadily growing pool of funds that allow RAND to address problems not yet on the policy agenda. RAND's revenue in FY07 was $223.01 million.

Locations

RAND's three principal U.S. locations are Santa Monica, California; Arlington, Virginia; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The RAND Gulf States Policy Institute has offices in Jackson, Mississippi, and New Orleans, Louisiana. RAND Europe is located in Cambridge, UK and Brussels, Belgium. The RAND-Qatar Policy Institute is in Doha, Qatar.

Staff

Of the approximately 1,600 people working at RAND, more than 950 are part of the research staff. Our researchers represent nearly every academic field and profession, from engineering and behavioral science to medicine and economics.

Organization

Research is carried out by five units that address social and economic policy issues both in the United States and overseas; by five centers that focus on international policy; by three federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs) that focus on national security; and by RAND Europe, an independently chartered European affiliate.

Governance

Since 1948, RAND has operated as an independent nonprofit organization. RAND's structure includes a Board of Trustees, which consists of distinguished public servants and leaders in the academic, business, and nonprofit sectors. Ann McLaughlin Korologos, former U.S. Secretary of Labor (1987–1989), serves as chairman of the board. James A. Thomson serves as president and chief executive officer. Michael D. Rich serves as executive vice president.

Educational Opportunities

Since 1970, RAND has operated an innovative and respected graduate school specializing in public policy analysis. The Pardee RAND Graduate School (PRGS) is the world's leading producer of Ph.D.'s in public policy analysis. PRGS currently enrolls approximately 90 Ph.D. students from more than 20 countries around the world. The School's alumni can be found in government, business, nonprofit organizations, and academia. RAND also offers a number of internship and fellowship programs. The Graduate Student Summer Associate Program allows outstanding students to conduct short-term independent research within the framework of an ongoing RAND project; these summer associates are mentored by RAND staff. RAND also provides postdoctoral candidates with the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and skills through several RAND fellowships and programs.
