Chloe Bird: A Closer Look at Care

Senior sociologist Chloe Bird's research on gender disparities in health care has attracted the attention of major players among health policymakers. In the past year, she has been invited to join the NIH Advisory Committee on Women's Health and to become a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In this Q&A, she tells us about her research project on gender disparities, and why more work needs to be done. Read more »

Remembering Henry S. Rowen

Henry "Harry" S. Rowen, RAND's president from 1967 to 1972, passed away last month at the age of 90. He oversaw the creation of what is now the Pardee RAND Graduate School and extended RAND's reach into domestic policy in the 1970s. RAND will host a memorial service for him on February 17, to which all alumni are invited. Read more »

From the Archives: Help Wanted, Women

At a time when most job opportunities for women were clerical or domestic, RAND's ads seeking mathematicians under the "Help Wanted, Women" section of the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times really stand out. As recently as the 1970s, newspaper want ads were segregated by gender, making RAND way ahead of the curve when they posted the same jobs under "Help Wanted, Female" as under "Help Wanted, Male." Helping the Most Vulnerable: Rajeev Ramchand

Earlier this year, we reported on three summer associates, each of whom pursued a different path after the program. Rajeev Ramchand was one of these alumni. He is now a senior behavioral and social scientist at RAND, and has researched adolescent substance abuse, racial disparities in the criminal justice system, and HIV risk behaviors among gay men. His recent work has sought to improve suicide prevention, especially within the military. Here he talks about what drives him. Read more »

Join Us and Support the Alumni Impact Fund

With December 31 only days away, time is running out to support the 2015 Alumni Impact Fund campaign. To date, almost 200 RAND alumni have participated, representing every decade and many departments—from research to facilities. Collectively, current and former staff members have given more than $78,000. It has been such an affirmation of what we have here at RAND—both of our work and of our relationships with each other—to see the outpouring of support. Read more »

Harold and Colene Brown Endow Pardee RAND Faculty Chair

Harold Brown has been affiliated with RAND for sixty years. Beginning in the 1950s, as a client when working at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, through today, as a trustee emeritus and philanthropist, Harold has supported RAND in numerous ways. At a recent RAND fundraising event, Harold announced a major gift to endow a faculty chair at the Pardee RAND Graduate School. Read more »
