Message from the President

Thanks to the generosity of alumni, the 2015 Alumni Impact Fund campaign exceeded its goal, raising nearly $110,000 to extend the impact of RAND's most important and timely research. Donors were invited to select from among several projects; earlier this month, the votes were tallied and two projects awarded Impact Fund support. Read more »

Lloyd S. Shapley Remembered

Long-serving RAND researcher Lloyd S. Shapley, who shared the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economics for his work on game theory, passed away last month. Shapley had an influential 27-year career as a mathematician at RAND, and was a leading expert in the study of strategic decisionmaking called game theory. He also taught at what is now Pardee RAND Graduate School, where he was awarded an honorary degree in 2014. Read more »

Alumni Event: Strategic Rethink

U.S. foreign and security policies will play a significant role in the 2016 presidential campaign. At a RAND Alumni event in Washington, D.C., Ambassador James Dobbins and RAND senior vice president for research and analysis Andrew Hoehn discussed the RAND Strategic Rethink project—which will continue to explore issues key to understanding America's future role in a turbulent world. Memorial Honors Henry S. Rowen

The RAND community gathered in Santa Monica in February to pay tribute to RAND's second president, Henry "Harry" S. Rowen, who died in November at the age of 90. Rowen was honored for laying the foundation for what the institution has become today. In a touching address, his children Hilary and Chris reflected on the meaningful role that RAND played in their father's life. Read more »

Accolade for Health Research Impact

In 2014, donors who contributed to the Alumni Impact Fund campaign nominated the work of Christine Eibner and her team as one of that year's two winning projects. In anticipation of the oral arguments in King v. Burwell, Christine presented her findings in a congressional briefing. The team's work was cited in and informed the economic reasoning underpinning the Supreme Court's 2015 decision. Earlier this year, their work received the prestigious Health Services Research Impact Award from AcademyHealth. Read more »

Alumnus James Babcock Gives Back

James Babcock, who worked in RAND's computer sciences department from 1954 to 1965, credits his time at RAND and the "cornucopia of knowledge" that he experienced here, for making possible his successful career. To help advance that cause of knowledge, Babcock is making a bequest to RAND in his estate plans. Read more »
