Remembering Charles Wolf, Jr.

Charles Wolf, Jr.

Charles Wolf, Jr., considered one of the intellectual founders of modern policy analysis, passed away on October 24. He was 92 years old. Wolf joined RAND as a senior economist in 1955 and was professionally active until just before his passing. He was one of RAND's most prominent economists, founding dean of what is now the Pardee RAND Graduate School, and the first RAND employee to mark 60 years with the organization. Read more »

Former Trustee Minow Receives Presidential Medal of Freedom

Former RAND trustee Newton ("Newt") Minow was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. He was presented with the award by President Obama at a ceremony at the White House on November 22, where he joined 20 other distinguished honorees, including Bill and Melinda Gates, Frank Gehry, Maya Lin, and Robert Redford. Family of Alumnus Donates to RAND Archives

James (Jim) DeHaven

William H. ("Bill") DeHaven, the son of RAND alumnus James C. ("Jim") De Haven, recently donated a trove of historical documents for preservation in the RAND Archives. His generous donation included correspondence between Jim DeHaven and his friend—and future RAND vice president—J. Richard Goldstein, his original offer letter from RAND, and the pro/con notes he made while deciding whether to take the job. Read more »

Alumni Impact Fund Update

With support from the 2015 Alumni Impact Fund award, RAND analyst Jirka Taylor attended an event in September on global strategies to address the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The event was held in conjunction with a meeting of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York City—the fourth time in history the UN General Assembly has focused on a specific health topic. In September, the RAND Alumni Association (RAA), in partnership with the Pardee RAND Graduate School, hosted a conversation in the Santa Monica office with Sina Beaghley, senior international/defense policy analyst, who spoke about the challenges of balancing intelligence, security, and privacy.
