Exhibition Traces the Career of Alumnus Merton Davies

An exhibition currently on view in RAND’s Santa Monica Library traces the 50-year career of Merton E. Davies, one of the first members of RAND’s staff. Organized by Brent Bradley in partnership with the RAND Archives, Merton E. Davies: Five Decades of Space Exploration features historical documents and artifacts from a recent donation to the RAND Archives from the Davies family. Read more »

$3 Million Gift Establishes China Policy Chair

Thanks to a generous $3 million gift from the Cyrus and Michael Tang Foundation, a new Tang Chair in China Policy Studies will initiate and manage a research agenda on China's policies for sustainable growth, build partnerships with research institutes in China, and mentor China studies scholars at RAND. The chair will support a senior scholar who will undertake research on the critical factors that will influence China's future, particularly in education and health care. Read more »

Zwick Impact Fund Supports Autonomous Vehicle Research

How safe should autonomous vehicles be before they're introduced to market? Some people think they must be nearly flawless before humans take their hands off the wheel. But new RAND research, supported with Zwick Impact funding, shows that putting self-driving cars on the road when they're moderately better than human drivers, but before they're perfect, improves the technology more quickly—and could save hundreds of thousands of lives over time. Celebrating RAND's Partnership with the Air Force

RAND hosted One Night with RAND in November to pay tribute to the seven-decade relationship between RAND and the U.S. Air Force. The event also celebrated the contributions of three individuals: Natalie Crawford, RAA president and former vice president and director of RAND Project AIR FORCE (1997–2006); Donald B. Rice, 17th U.S. Secretary of the Air Force and former president and CEO of RAND; and Susan F. Rice, who helped establish RAND’s development program. Read more »
