How Well Are Service Members Taking Care of Themselves?

RAND updated, administered, and analyzed data from the most recent Defense Department Health Related Behaviors Survey in 2015. Among the findings: more than half of service members got less sleep than they need, e-cigarette use is a growing problem, rates of binge drinking remained nearly as high as in 2011, and the prevalence of specific chronic diseases among service members was relatively low compared to the general U.S. population.

The health behaviors assessed in the survey may affect force readiness or the ability of military personnel to meet the demands of military life. The results suggest that certain groups of service members warrant targeted intervention to prevent multiple negative health outcomes and to improve current behaviors.
